Visa Credit Cards and UK Gambling
Visa credit cards were once one of the most common deposit methods at online casinos worldwide. However, in April 2020, the UK Gambling Commission banned the use of credit cards for all gambling transactions in Great Britain. This regulation applies to every credit card network, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, and covers both online and in-person gambling.
The ban was introduced after research showed that 22% of online gamblers using credit cards were classified as problem gamblers. By removing the ability to gamble with borrowed money, the UKGC aimed to reduce the risk of players accumulating debts they could not repay. All UK-licensed operators are required to block credit card deposits.
UK players can still use Visa debit cards to deposit at licensed casinos, as the ban applies only to credit products. Visa debit transactions draw directly from the player’s current account balance rather than a line of credit. Players who held Visa credit as their preferred method prior to 2020 have since shifted to debit cards, e-wallets, or bank transfer options. Casinos operating under non-UK licences may still accept Visa credit, but UK players should be aware that using offshore sites carries its own risks.
