How the new licences work

- 29 September 2026: the licence auction starts.
- 1 December 2026: licence applications are due.
- Early 2027: the DIA expects to start issuing licences.
The transition period
From 1 December 2026, offshore providers that have not applied for a licence must stop offering online casino gambling in New Zealand. Providers that apply can keep operating while the DIA assesses their application.
What the law means for players
The DIA says that gambling with offshore providers during the transition is legal, but it is not regulated in New Zealand. Under the new law, a player who gambles with an unlicensed site does not commit an offence. Licensed online casinos must check that you are 18 or over, and land-based casinos require you to be 20 or over.
